Abstract

Limited land availability, insufficient integration of technology into cultivation practices, and the need to strengthen practical numeracy skills, such as recording harvest yields, provided the rationale for this community service program. The program aimed to empower the Women Farmers Group through Internet of Things based aquaponics training to strengthen household food security. A participatory approach was employed using a one-group pretest–posttest evaluation design involving 10 KWT members. The program comprised introductory socialization, technical training on the assembly and operation of an IoT-based aquaponics system, applied numeracy training, mentoring, and evaluation. The evaluation instrument consisted of 25 multiple-choice items assessing nine indicators of knowledge and numeracy competence. The results demonstrated improvement across all indicators, with the mean score increasing from 71.33% on the pretest to 93.33% on the posttest. The greatest improvement was observed in knowledge of IoT-based aquaponics, which increased from 30.00% to 76.67%. Meanwhile, four numeracy-related indicators reached 100% on the posttest and were classified as having high N-gain values. KWT members also demonstrated good practical competence in independently operating the IoT-based aquaponics installation. Program sustainability was supported through post-training mentoring and the continued use of the installation as a demonstration model that could potentially be replicated by other community groups. These outcomes indicate that IoT-based aquaponics training can contribute to sustainable household food security while simultaneously supporting the achievement of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) at the village level.
