Abstract

This study departs from the common dichotomy in higher education spaces where classrooms are viewed as places for learning, while mosques are limited to worship activities. At Universitas Islam Ibrahimy Banyuwangi (UNIIB), such boundaries become fluid when the mosque veranda is utilized by students as a space for discussion, religious study, and alternative learning. The main question of this study is how this religious space functions as an arena for shaping students’ academic habitus. The significance of this research lies in addressing the limitation of previous studies, which mainly discussed the mosque in terms of worship, general education, or social empowerment, but rarely examined a campus mosque veranda as a site for producing academic habitus through the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu. This research employed a qualitative approach with a critical case study design conducted at UNIIB. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, with a theoretical reading based on Pierre Bourdieu.. The findings reveal that the mosque veranda at UNIIB has transformed into a socio-intellectual arena shaped by symbolic, cultural, and social capital. In this space, religious studies, intellectual discussions, and formal learning activities take place repeatedly, gradually forming students’ academic habitus in the form of learning ethos, dialogical courage, critical attitudes, and moral discipline. This study contributes to emphasizing the importance of religious spaces as strategic pedagogical resources for strengthening campus academic culture. The limitation of this research lies in its single-case focus, making generalization limited. Therefore, future studies are recommended to compare similar practices in other universities or employ quantitative approaches to measure their impact on students’ achievement and character development.
